LIU Ren 刘任
LIU Ren (b. 1983) graduated from the Department of Printmaking at Fine Art College of Shanghai University in 2007 and now lives and works in Shanghai. LIU’s art practice mainly involves painting, sculpture and installation. He so often draws inspiration from everyday materials around him and conceals accumulated sentiments and analytical texts behind the clean, neat and orderly visual forms. He focuses on the passage of time, the consumption of life and the state of human beings, where fragmented information and mundane materials are transformed.

林叶 | 刘任:永恒轮回中的重与轻
8 September 2022如果我们生命的每一秒钟得无限重复,我们就会像耶稣被钉在十字架上一样被钉在永恒上。这一想法是残酷的。在永恒轮回的世界里,一举一动都承受着不能承受的责任重负。这就是尼采说永恒轮回的想法是最沉重的负担的缘故吧。 ——米兰·昆德拉《不能承受的生命之轻》 2014 年7月10日,日本观念艺术家河原温去世。2016年,刘任经过细致调查之后,判定这位对自己影响至深的艺术家并没有将自己临终这天的时间纳入到他那著名的《今日绘画》系列之中,他便以草纸作为媒介,创作了作品《河原温1932.12.24–2014.07.10》,为艺术家河原温补上他生命中最重要的两天——出生之日与去世之日。 刘任的这一行为显然不是为河原温而作,也不是要简单地借用河原温倾注于《今日绘画》中的那种时间观念。相反,这个作品中刘任所提示的恰恰是一种与河原温相对的时间观念。 《今日绘画》是河原温从1966年1月开始并持续创作数十年的系列作品。在这个作品中,河原温在特定的某一天里,用极其细致、繁琐的笔法,极其简单的构图,在一个单色平面涂层的背景上描绘当天的日期,如果在当日无法完成,这张画就会被销毁。在这个作品中,时间是超越的,全然等价的,河原温仿佛是在用自己的身体实践来象征人类的行为,时间以其冷酷无情的状态消解了人类赋予自身的一切意义,不论人类如何挣扎、抗争,最终都会被卷入时间的粉碎机之中。 然而,当刘任将河原温的生卒日期独立地提取出来之后,时间的性质在他这里就发生了转变。出生与死亡是任何人、任何生物都无法摆脱的命运,是必须始终面对和思考的终极命题。换言之,刘任的时间观不是超越的,而是内在于自身的,是始终困扰并影响着个体生命的、具体到一分一秒的时间。当他借用河原温的形式将这两个时间点从浩瀚的时间之流中提取出来的时候,内在于个体生命的时间就与超越式的时间发生了决定性的断裂。 刘任对此显然有着清醒的认识。在作品《寸光阴-海粒》中,刘任用白沙制作的“沙海”象征超越性的时间,200颗如个体生命一般的“海粒”在其中浮沉。“海粒”上以丝网印刷的方式印制的颗粒状海浪则象征了内在于生命之中的个体时间,而人的生命则如同另一个作品《凝固的海》中那个卡在沙漏细颈处的海粒,始终独立于时间之外。于是,一个终极命题就浮现出来——我们该如何度过这一生? 事实上,河原温的时间观在刘任的作品体系中并非无效,只是转变成了与我们切身相关的“生命的每一秒钟得无限重复”的“最沉重的负担”,每一个人依然需要面对内在于个体生命的等价的时间——我们生命的每一秒钟得无限重复。倘若我们在这“最沉重的负担”中只是看到了生命的无意义的话,那么这样的负担是否就完全消失,人是否就如米兰·昆德拉所说的“会变得比空气还轻,就会飘起来,就会远离大地和地上的生命,人也就只是一个半真的存在,其运动也会变得自由而没有意义”?倘若负担完全消失,那我们到底是选择重还是轻?是选择灵还是肉? 要解决这些问题,首先需要考虑的是个体生命与时间的关系。在2011年创作的作品《尘归尘2》中,刘任通过一个沙漏装置与一幅装置图解阐述了自己的想法。装置图解中这样写道: 1. 在没有人参与的状态下,时间是静止的,时间只对活人起作用。 2. 摇晃时间,产生时间,此时,我活着。 3. 在时间的流动过程中,生命的痕迹被同时代动着,直到尘埃落定。 在这里,刘任非常明确地表达了自己的时间观——如果没有生命的存在,时间是没有意义的,而且时间始终与个体的生命实践、精神思想融合在一起的。只要生命诞生,无论如何都要必须承受无限重复的时间。或许可以说,通过这个作品,刘任主动选择了承担那“最沉重的负担”,选择了灵肉合一地承载时间。这同样也意味着接受时间的等价性、生命的等价性。这一点我们可以在刘任选择的创作材料——草纸与蛋壳中感受到。 草纸与蛋壳都是日常生活中最普遍、最廉价的物件,用过即弃,丝毫不为人重视。这样的无价值性让这两种材料成为了无意义的象征物。最初,刘任利用这两种材料的无价值性来对抗社会上对英语的重视,消解英语被赋予的社会价值。之后,这种材料上的廉价性、无意义性被他进一步转化成认知世界的媒介。世界上的任何事物,不论高低贵贱,只要在这两种材料中翻滚一番,便显现出其本来面目。 2011年刘任以草纸为媒介开始创作《乔布斯》系列作品。他把当时被认为是信息传播民主化之标志的微博转移到了草纸上。他一本正经地在带有特殊皱褶的草纸上描绘微博的界面,以及与乔布斯相关的图像、文字信息,让媒介与内容发生危机。于是,毫无价值的草纸不仅消解掉乔布斯身上的意义,也消解了微博本身的意义,同时也暗示了让人们无时无刻不沉浸其中的网络信息,不过如草纸一般轻浮、鄙俗。“只是短短的几年,画面上所绘制的微博页面所代表的中国最重要的社交平台,就被微信代替了,它们的宿命就如同厕所里的草纸,日复一日的更替着人类的排泄”,倘若从现在的角度来看的话,就会明白,任何传播媒介都一样摆脱不了被取代、被抛弃的结局,在时间面前,人类的行为都会被搅合成共同的命运。至于那些被推成热点的信息,不论承载了多么厚重、伟大的内容,也都不过是转瞬即逝的消费品。 需要强调的是,讽刺绝不是刘任的目的所在,创造对立、矛盾,只是为了清醒地反思眼前的现实状况,去除事物所被赋予的意义也不是要呈现一个全然虚无的世界,而是将所有事物拉回到最根本的起点来重新审视、考察、判断。于是,从艺术领域的马塞尔·杜尚、安迪·沃霍尔、约瑟夫·博伊斯到科技领域的爱因斯坦与原子弹、人类登月、正在控制人类未来发展的科技公司,以及科技与宗教的关系、科技与人类的关系等等,都一一登上了刘任的草纸书,以通过各种不同的方式被重新审视。当爱因斯坦与原子弹被作为一体两面之物展示在我们面前的时候,我们到底该如何看待爱因斯坦的成就,如何看待原子弹所带来的灾难?当一面玻璃阻隔在上帝与亚当之间的时候,我们该如何理解宗教与人的关系?当宇航员指向宇宙深处的手指被一面镜子折射回自身的时候,我们又该如何理解人类的欲望呢?如此等等。 另一方面,草纸这个材料也同样被用于对时间的理解。自古以来,人类为了把握时间与生命,习得了一套分割、标记时间的方法,用一种可见的、可理解的数学模型混沌的时间,逼迫时间从黑暗之中有限地显现出来,并让所有人按照这个数学模型中的时间去展开生命实践。当这套系统发展到一定程度,权力系统为了有效地控制管理开始将时间神圣化,赋予一些特殊的时间点以过多的意义,让人用权力系统规定的方式去理解时间,调整自己的行为模式,从而达到统治的目的。与此同时,商业资本也利用这种神圣化的时间,来达到控制消费者的目的。 在作品《把酒问月》中,时间被草纸这种廉价的材料拉回到原点,成为一种无意义的存在,另一方面刘任则借用李白的诗歌《把酒问月》对人类的行为提出质疑。当我们读到“今人不见古时月/今月曾经照古人/古人今人若流水/共看明月皆如此”这样的诗句时,或许就能理解,将时间神圣化不过是一种刻舟求剑式的愚行。而在作品《Panta...Read more -

1 June 2021英国脱欧像不像欧洲秃顶?有三个破洞的窨井盖是不是很像卢齐欧·封塔纳的作品?跌在草丛里的单车能否成为杜尚式的现成品?还有拼贴入樱花胜景里的葛优躺,或在撞得歪歪扭扭的共享单车车筐里一张同样歪歪扭扭的达利超现实画作印刷品……刘任在东画廊的最新个展“昨日重现”中用88张明信片组成的装置作品《给自己的明信片》(2020)在致敬河原温(On Kawara)的同时,更像是艺术家的某种日常禅修:网络媒介上的各式图片和生活场景勾连着艺术史,碰撞出一次次脑内高潮,又轻盈得好像玩笑。明信片背面略带反讽地写着“Have a nice day”,帆船邮票上则盖着刘任印有日期的自制邮戳,那是一种如今人们几乎已想不起来的古老仪式,那个截止日期“以邮戳为准”的时代恍如隔世。如同电影《怒火青春》开头旁白里那个坠楼的人在下落过程中不断跟自己确认的那句“直到现在,一切都好”,这些明信片也仿佛把河原温在上世纪七十年代说过的话调了个头对准艺术家自己:“直到此刻,我还活着。” 在法语里,“高潮”(petite mort)一词按字面意思其实是“小小的死”。这种生与死的辩证也体现在另一件借鉴河原温的明信片装置《圈圈》(2020)之中,这是一场更抽象、朴素、观念化的大型禅修:366张明信片背面记录了艺术家2020年每天入睡和起床时间,醒与睡也是某种意义上意识的生和死吗?明信片正面则是本地祭奠逝者的烧纸仪式后在地面留下的圈圈痕迹,就好像一扇扇生与死、现实与想象的穿越之门。我特意找到2月7日那一张,想看看在那个集体性的不眠之夜,艺术家是不是同样难以入眠——的确比通常晚了近两小时。 面对生、死、时间这些颇有存在主义意味宏大主题,刘任选择使用的手法和材料却是日常而极简的:在占据展厅核心位置的装置作品《寸光阴-海粒》(2021)中,一张大海的数码图片被切割成上千份2立方厘米的“海粒”,散落在一片沙的海洋之上。这种疫情时代人们常常陷入的、时间凝固的感觉,在《凝固的海》(2020)中最为凸显:数码海粒卡在了沙漏瓶颈处,时间仿佛就此梗塞,或者说,像电脑里梅西抬脚射门的瞬间突然定格,代表“数据加载中”的小太阳符号没完没了地永恒转动。 文/ btrRead more -
袁 佳维 | 海上景观:丹迪的意外反身
6 January 2018每当满潮时,河水暴涨,便出现逆流。观测站的信号旗显示出平稳的风速,朝着塔上飘去。在茫茫夜雾之中,海关的尖塔显得烟气迷蒙起来。堆放在堤坝上的木桶坐着许多苦力,他们的身上湿漉漉的。残破不堪的黑帆随着钝重的波涛东倒西歪地吱吱嘎嘎地向前移动。长着一张白皙明敏的中世纪勇士面孔的参木满街转悠之后回到了码头。河畔长条椅上坐着一排满脸倦容的俄国妓女。逆潮行驶的舢板上蓝色的灯光,在她们默默无语的眼睑前一刻不停地旋转着。([日] 横光利一著、卞铁坚译,《寝园》(横光利一文集/叶渭渠主编),北京:作家出版社,2001年,第3页。) 这是新感觉派作家横光利一(Riichi Yokomitsu)所著第一部长篇小说《上海》(1928—1931年)的开场:日本青年参木在外滩无所事事地闲逛,视线边沿浮现起对于上海的原始印象。苏联导演亚科夫·布利奥赫(Yakov Bliokh)拍摄的黑白无声纪录片《上海纪事》(1926—1928年)以相同的画面开启这座世界之城:俯视镜头首先对准黄浦江边密密麻麻的货轮与渔船,随即切换为特写锁定乘坐“WANDERER”(漫游者)号快艇兜风的异国男女,细节涉及男士的西服钮扣与女士的玛丽珍鞋。更为巧合的是,《上海》将时代背景设置在五卅运动,《上海纪事》则取材四一二事件,两者都通过吸纳殖民主义风格创作中的“凝视”策略进行时空构造,通过投射丰富多元的情感、性别与身体关系来完成对上海的全景式描述,并在一定程度上渲染对左翼或其他革命力量的同理心。 东画廊十周年展览“海上丹迪”意图重新审视“凝视”策略在跨文化实践中的特殊意义,尤其关于“凝视”如何对外来文本与地方文本展开互译而在长久以来影响着上海这座城市的文化话语。因此,展览选择以浪荡子(dandy)作为“凝视”的媒介,同时赋予该文学形象自属的名字“丹迪”(Dandy),强调虚构/虚拟人物的表演性、装置性与叙事性。历史上经典的浪荡子主要包括十九世纪上半叶巴黎最著名的象征主义者夏尔·皮埃尔·波德莱尔与英国维多利亚时代的唯美主义者奥斯卡·王尔德,他们提出一种颓废而颠覆的个人主义创造精神与艺术观念,凭借不同的面具与姿态唤醒并领导自身所处的不定状态。曾经出现在上海这方水土里的浪荡子比如活跃于上世纪二三十年代的刘呐鸥是的新感觉派的引介者与推动者,他以丰富的散居经历结合蒙太奇、人物心理分析等手法,将现实生活中的各种矛盾组织成展示内心强烈激情与暧昧的外部条件。 “海上丹迪”的十二位参展艺术家通过自身的视觉路径对浪荡子作出想象,甚至直接把浪荡子看成是第二自我,在开启角色游戏的过程中渲染个人独有的气质、性格、习惯、癖好。他们不自觉地使用起浪荡子善用的“模拟”方法,以此解构“凝视”与世界主义上海的关联。世界主义往往是一个用来美化殖民事实的台词,而一连串复杂的内化作用逐渐累积并造成了对殖民化的漠然以及对世界主义的向往。“模拟”恰巧具有颠覆殖民权力的力量。一般来说,殖民化能够带来的现代化不免让原居者产生崇拜或渴望的心态,甚至对本身的文化心存自卑和厌恶。但是通过“模拟”,原居者可以逐渐了解殖民权力并非天然而是被建构的产物。原居者透过“模拟” 看清殖民化的问题,使自己处于进退两难的境地,并发展出相互依赖的关系。这种既吸引又排斥的混乱干扰了既定的殖民秩序。 比如, 张云垚假借毛毡的有型质地,由绘画模仿雕塑,西方哲人、帝王、统治者、神话人物的身体轮廓叠加出一个偏执的、悲惨的、处于错误时代的自我,徘徊于放纵与约束之间,质询社会文化框架对于享乐的容许度。a.f.art theatre芳翎在为自己圈定的剧场框架中把白衬衫穿着成戏服,说明其趋于放弃原居者身份的意图,却又在男性画外音的指正下不断修改着自己的行为而表现出不安。胡为一把裸露的女性身体与腐败的城市遗址覆盖到一起而产生缠绕效果,强调兼具浪荡子与漫游者特质的艺术家人格,正是对浪荡子“先贤”们的致敬。许以挪用比利时超现实主义画家雷内·马格利特的《情人》并让一对闺蜜扮演处于室内的两人,一人佩戴在无名指上的戒指提示着性别与婚姻正相关的刻板印象,另一人却通过化装/异装发泄过高的性别表现欲望,挑战固化的性别意识形态。若将这些作品视为幻肢而构成丹迪的整体,那么浪荡子在跳脱其舶来品属性后依旧具备着生命力。或许,丹迪本身就是一个来自未来的时光旅行者,悄无声息地协调起我们与此刻、与地方的联系。Read more
