WU Houting 吴厚挺

WU Houting (b.1985) is currently working and living in Shanghai. His most recent series of metal sculptures was inspired by the exterior designs of commonplace consumer items, the shock-absorbing plastic foam blocks found in packaging boxes, and the “gap” that exists between an object and its support. The artist recreates these structural elements with the help of the CNC machining process of hardware moulds, disassembling, cutting, juxtaposing and reconstructing them, transcending the traditional solidity of sculpture, while combining the normative logic of modern industrial design with the form of sculpture.

WU Houting’s solo exhibitions include “2066” (Don Gallery, Shanghai, 2023), “Lurking” (Meibo Art Museum, Shanghai, 2023) and “Exception” (Gallery 55, Shanghai, 2019). WU’s works have been presented at “Hippocampus Capsule” (Don Gallery, Shanghai, 2023), “East Bund Time” (Hudong MoCA, Shanghai, 2022), “domo carnival”(West Bund Dome, Shanghai, 2021), “Centennial Sea·Bund Space Art Season” (BAI Work, Shanghai, 2021), “Shanghai Invitation Exhibition for Chinese Young Artists” (Putuo Culture Center, Shanghai, 2021), “Abscission of Appearance”(Cube Art Museum, Shanghai, 2020), “Decoherence” (ShanghART, Shanghai, 2017), “Group Dynamics” (Shanghai Xinqiao Art Museum, Shanghai, 2016), “Contemporary Youth Art Museum” (Ningbo Museum of Art, Ningbo, 2015), etc. He has also participated in the public art projects such as “Hu Shi Guang Art Eco Site” (Quzhou, China, 2023), “Season of Art in the Woods” (Pujiang Country Park, Shanghai, 2023).
