“Le Neutre”—the title of Barthes’s lecture course, derived from the grammatical term le neutre (“the neuter”) and expanded into the broader category of le neutre as “the neutral”—attends not to emotions of impassivity or detachment but to a space where all emotions briefly coexist, much as no sentence can ever fully contain sorrow. The exhibition title ‘The Neutral’ signifies not an emotional midpoint but the instant just before feeling is depleted, the light on the verge of disappearance, the temporal interval in which one suspends oneself to endure loss. This sense of the neutral is a locus where all emotions dwell simultaneously and yet none settle into final form. The exhibition captures this subtle terrain, asking whether, amid today’s exhausted image environment, the language of empathy might still open a space both sensorial and ethical. Following these faint spectral reverberations, it proceeds toward a journey of mourning with what remains.
