Rodez, France.

Don Gallery is pleased to share that ZHANG Yunyao‘s work is currently on display at Musée Fenaille in the exhibition “Visages, L'art du portrait grec et romain dans les collections du musée du Louvre” (Faces, the Art of Greek and Roman Portraiture in the Collection of the Louvre Musuem) in Rodez, France.

The exhibition is on display from June 7 to November 2, 2025. It is organized with the exceptional collaboration of the Louvre Museum and the Fenaille Musuem through a selection of masterpieces of the art of portraiture that flourished in the ancient Greek and Roman worlds.

Portraiture was a major art form of Greco-Roman antiquity, playing a wide variety of roles in societies. Once they were images of power, supports of memory, or offerings to the deities. Today, these portraits represent the faces of the civilizations of classical antiquity - or rather, a multitude of faces.

The exhibition offers a renewed vision of the art of portraiture in Antiquity and addresses three major questions arising from current research: how is the genre of portraiture defined in terms of artistic means? What functions did it fulfill in classical Antiquity? How did it become a privileged means of expressing power from the Hellenistic period onward?

Portraiture is indeed an artistic elaboration, not a photograph of reality. The exhibition “Visages” extends this questioning by exploring one of the major artistic achievements of Antiquity, both astonishingly modern and radically foreign to our frameworks of thought.
